Federal InstitutionsIn Canada, women sentenced to prison terms of greater than two years will serve their time in a federal institution operated by the Correctional Service of Canada. In Ontario, there is one penitentiary which can house about 75 women and one community correctional centre (CCC), which is slated to close soon. Grand Valley Institution Isabel McNeil House Provincial InstitutionsAdult women sentenced to incarceration for less than two years serve their sentences in provincial institutions operated by the Ministry of Public Safety and Security (MPSS). One provincial facility is dedicated to housing women, the Vanier Centre for Women, at the Maplehurst campus in Milton. It is designed for 124 women, mostly sentenced but also some remanded in custody pending trial or sentence. Women are also held in special units of local jails, detention centres, and correctional centres where men are housed. Young offenders, ages 12 to 17, are housed separately from adults in facilities operated by the MPSS or non-profit transfer paymenrt agencies. Most are held in co-ed facilities, sometimes in the same unit as males. AdultsVisiting hours vary from facility to facility. Call the institution to confirm local guidelines and visiting hours for the day you plan to visit.
